Intonation

Intonation has to do with the way an entire sentence sounds in a given language, somewhat akin to a musical melody. It is the rise and fall, stress and de-stress of sound which gives sentences their texture and coloration. Normally the intonation patterns are called “suprasegmental features” because the way our vocal cords vibrate producing difference frequency sounds is something that happens “above” the segments, that is, above the words.
